The Social Sustainable Futures Program was launched in 2025 to support EduCare families in transitioning from long-term assistance to sustainable, independent livelihoods. Its core objective is to equip every family member with practical skills and a clear pathway to stable income, enabling them to build secure and self-reliant lives.
This program builds on BEF's long-term commitment to supporting destitute single mothers and their children through an integrated model of education, basic needs support, and livelihood development. It focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty through structured empowerment rather than long-term dependency, aligning with BEF's broader mission of supporting vulnerable women and children in Nepal to live with safety and dignity.
To implement this vision, BEF introduced the role of the Sustainable Futures Coordinator (SFC), who is responsible for skills development, employment support, financial literacy, entrepreneurship guidance, mentorship, and building strategic partnerships with local governments and training institutions.
Program Approach
The program follows a structured pathway from dependency to independence, built on three interconnected pillars:
Skills Development & Employment
Beneficiaries are supported through vocational training, certified courses, and practical skill-building programs. Training pathways are selected based on individual interests, abilities, and local job opportunities. Graduates are then supported in securing employment or pursuing further training opportunities.
Financial Literacy & Economic Stability
Women and families receive financial education focused on savings, budgeting, and long-term planning. Each participant is supported in opening and managing a personal bank account, promoting financial inclusion and independence.
Entrepreneurship & Small Business Development
Families with entrepreneurial potential are supported in starting small income-generating activities such as poultry farming and other micro-enterprises. This includes training, starter resources, and ongoing mentorship to ensure sustainability and growth.
Future Direction
The Social Sustainable Futures Program demonstrates that with the right support, families can move from survival to self-reliance. Women who once depended entirely on assistance shall earn income, manage small businesses, and make independent financial decisions. The program continues to evolve, but its direction remains clear: building sustainable futures through skills, opportunity, and empowerment. Going forward, the program will expand its impact through:
- Diversifying livelihood opportunities, including tailoring, agriculture, retail, and livestock.
- Strengthening seed funding mechanisms for micro-enterprises.
- Expanding vocational training and employment placement opportunities.
- Deepening collaboration with government bodies and training institutions.
